How to Prepare Your High School Athlete for College Sports
Playing in college takes a body that's ready for the work and a mindset that's ready for the jump. At Char Sports Performance in Montclair, NJ, we train youth to college athletes to get there. Here's how we do it, and how you can help as a parent.

What "college-ready" means
On our College Pathway page we break it into four parts:
- Strong: a strength base built with good technique, so athletes arrive ready to train, not catch up.
- Fast: acceleration, change of direction and speed that carries over to the field, court or ice.
- Durable: training adapted to each athlete's strengths and weaknesses, so they stay healthy through long seasons.
- Mentally ready: toughness, focus and coachability, with real emphasis on preparing for college life and competitive sports.
Start early, build in stages
College readiness doesn't begin senior year. Our Youth program covers movement basics, running mechanics and core strength. Junior High introduces resistance training safely, along with speed and power. High School + College moves on to individualized, high-level performance training. Already in high school? The best time to start is now.
Begin with an honest evaluation
Every athlete has gaps. Some are fast but not yet strong, others strong but stiff. Every high school and college athlete starts with an evaluation of their individual strengths and weaknesses, and training is built around what they need.

Strength and speed, together
Group sessions run 80 minutes: 40 minutes of strength work and 40 minutes of speed and conditioning on our 6,000 sq ft indoor turf. Because it's indoors, sprints, cuts and sport-specific drills don't stop for the weather, and that consistency adds up over a year.
Train the mental side
Our coaches have played their sports at high levels and bring that experience to every session. Showing up consistently, taking coaching and staying focused under pressure are skills, and they can be trained like any other.

Every sport, one plan per athlete
Athletes from many sports train side by side, and each follows a plan built around their sport and their gaps. Want more individual attention, or a session for a whole team? See Personal & Team Training.

We generally recommend two to four sessions a week, depending on whether they're in or out of season.
Is it too late to start in high school?
No. The evaluation shows where your athlete is starting from, and training builds from there.
