Ice Hockey Training in Montclair, NJ: Off-Ice Strength, Speed and Hip Health

Off-ice training builds the strength and power behind every stride. At Char Sports Performance, we train youth to college hockey players to be more explosive, stronger in battles and healthier through a long season. Our speed and conditioning carry over to the ice.

What we train

  • Single-leg and hip strength: split squats, lateral lunges and similar work that matches the stride.
  • Adductor and hip resilience: adductor strength and hip mobility.
  • Power and speed: lateral jumps, bounds and sprint work on turf.
  • Core and upper body: for shooting and board battles.
  • Shift-like conditioning: short, intense intervals with recovery.
  • By position: backward and lateral skating strength for defensemen, and hip mobility and quick lateral pushes for goalies.

Why it helps

  • Groin and hip injuries are a common concern in hockey, and adductor strength and mobile hips are commonly used to help reduce that risk.
  • Strength, power and mobility are easier to build off the ice.
  • In season, we maintain strength without adding fatigue; the off-season is the best window to build it.

How it works

Every high school and college athlete starts with an evaluation of their individual strengths and weaknesses. Group sessions run 80 minutes: 40 minutes of strength work and 40 minutes of speed and conditioning on our 6,000 sq ft indoor turf at 180 Bloomfield Ave, Floor 3, in Montclair. We recommend two to four sessions a week, depending on whether an athlete is in or out of season. Younger ice hockey players build the base in our Youth and Junior High programs, and older players train in High School + College. Want one-on-one coaching or a session for a whole team? Why train off the ice?

Ice time is limited, and strength, power and mobility are easier to build off the ice.

Is turf work useful for hockey players?

Yes. Sprints, lateral bounds and conditioning on turf train the same qualities that drive skating speed.

What should players wear?

Athletic shoes or turfs, no cleats, please.

Tell us about your athlete, their position and their goals, and we'll build a plan.
