Field hockey players need strong legs, hips and backs, quick feet and a lot of endurance. At Char Sports Performance, we train youth to college players to be faster, more powerful and healthier through a demanding season.

What we train

  • Speed, agility and footwork: short acceleration, cutting and quick feet.
  • Leg, hip and back strength: to hold a low position longer and help protect the lower back.
  • Core and rotational power: for harder hits and drag flicks.
  • Mobility and recovery: hip mobility, rollouts and stretching.
  • By position: repeat-sprint conditioning for midfielders, lateral footwork and recovery runs for defenders, and explosive legs and reaction speed for goalkeepers.

Why it helps

  • Strength and mobility work can help players hold a low position more comfortably.
  • In season, we maintain strength and support recovery; off-season training builds the speed and strength that show up the following fall.

How it works

Every high school and college athlete starts with an evaluation of their individual strengths and weaknesses. Group sessions run 80 minutes: 40 minutes of strength work and 40 minutes of speed and conditioning on our 6,000 sq ft indoor turf at 180 Bloomfield Ave, Floor 3, in Montclair. We recommend two to four sessions a week, depending on whether an athlete is in or out of season. Younger field hockey players build the base in our Youth and Junior High programs, and older players train in High School + College. Want one-on-one coaching or a session for a whole team? See Personal & Team Training. High school field hockey players and field hockey teams train with us for speed, agility and footwork, as well as recovery and mindfulness sessions.

Parent FAQs

Why do field hockey players get back pain?

The low, bent-over posture puts sustained load on the back and hips. Strength and mobility work can help players hold that position more comfortably.

Can a whole field hockey team train together?

Yes. We run hour-long team workouts tailored to a team's needs, plus recovery sessions.

What should players wear?

Athletic shoes or turfs, no cleats, please.

Tell us about your athlete, their position and their goals, and we'll build a plan.
